Meme Beauce Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
Meme Beauce is one of those typical heirloom tomatoes we all dream of: she produces large beefsteak type ribbed tomatoes, great for sandwiches. Indeterminate and regular leaf.
80 days from transplant, which means end of August in our climate.
According to Heritage Harvest: An excellent heirloom tomato from Quebec. In 1995, a carpenter renovating an old abandoned house in St. Joseph de Beauce, QC found about 200 unlabelled tomato seeds in the basement. Nobody lived in the house for more than 30 years, and according to the neighbors, there was no garden there for at least 60 years. The seeds were given to Gérard Parent, who managed to germinate only 3 seeds.
80 days from transplant.
minimum 25 seeds per pack.
Seed starting:
In our climate tomatoes like a head start - start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost (depending on your region). Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, keeping the soil warm and moist. Once the first true leaves appear, plant up into plug trays. Plant outside in full sun once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Mulch with straw or other organic matter!
Tomatoes will do well staked.
Companion plants: basil, nasturtium, carrots, calendula.
