White Scallop Zucchini (circa 1500)
Cucurbita pepo
Also known as Custard Marrow, Patisson Panache, Cymling.
This is a plant that inspires creativity.
This is an ancient heirloom zucchini/pattypan. According to Heritage Harvest, this variety was illustrated in the French botanist Matthias de l'Obel's Plantatum set Stripium Icones in 1951, so we know that it dates to at least the 1500s.
Cymling/symnel was the word for what we known now was pattypan summer squash. Cymling is a cake eaten during Lent, and these vegetables resemble its shape. Cymlings/Pattypans were once the most popular vegetable in the colonies.
The fruit colours range from white, off-white and creamy, with scalloped edges. They are absolutely delicious and extremely prolific. What's more, they are absolutely dreamy.
Bush plant : 50 days from transplant.
20 seeds per pack.
Seed starting:
Start indoors 3 to 4 weeks before last frost. Sow 1inch deep - they like warm soil to germinate. Plant out once the soil is warmed, after all danger of frost. You can also directly seed them in your garden once the soil is warm. They will not tolerate frost. Space plants 5ft apart for vining types, and 3 ft apart for bush types.
We live and garden on ancestral territory of Algonquin Anishnaabeg People, forever territory of wild fauna & flora, cultivated lands of Irish and French settlers, and now beloved home of the junco seeds family (humans, chickens, dogs, sheep and cats)
